Let's be honest, rainy days on Vancouver Island are basically a season of their own. And if you've got a toddler or young child at home, you know the struggle: they need to move, you need a moment to breathe, and the living room can only take so much.
Here are five rainy day ideas for families in the Cowichan Valley that will keep the little ones happy and give you a chance to actually exhale.
1. Visit Gigi's House Play Cafe (Duncan, BC)We may be a little biased, but Gigi's House was literally built for rainy days like this. Our indoor play space features a climbing structure, slide, kitchen play area, and open-ended wooden toys all designed to spark imagination and burn energy safely. While the kids play, you get a proper hot latte and a seat that isn't the floor. Drop in Tuesday–Friday 9am–2pm or Sunday 9am–12pm. Just $5 per child.
2. Storytime at the Cowichan Valley Regional LibraryThe library in Duncan offers free drop-in storytime sessions for little ones. Check their schedule online it's a wonderful, calm activity that supports early literacy too.
3. Bake Together at HomeSimple recipes like banana muffins or no-bake energy balls are perfect for little hands. Bonus: it counts as sensory play AND you get a snack.
4. Sensory Bin PlayFill a bin with dried pasta, rice, or kinetic sand and let them go wild. Add cups, spoons, and small toys for extra fun. Our Monkey Bandit Kids sensory kits are a great option if you want everything ready to go available online and in-cafe.
5. Dance Party + Movement ClassClear the living room and put on a favourite playlist. Or join one of our music and movement classes at Gigi's House check our events page for the next one!
